Robert Creamer: America Needs a Jobs Bill, and the Federal Deficit Shouldn't Stand in the Way

Robert Creamer: America Needs a Jobs Bill, and the Federal Deficit Shouldn't Stand in the Way

"Let us remember that the Republicans never hesitated to create deficits when they were in charge. They generated deficits to finance their wars and their tax breaks for the rich without blinking an eye. Unfortunately, they created deficits at exactly the time in the economic cycle when you should be building up surpluses and paying down debt."

dear friends (an appeal)

Hi everyone!

Ballots are in the mail for the November 3rd election. Those of you who have been in contact with me recently know that I have been working hard on behalf of two specific state issues: Referendum 71 (Approve) and Initiative 1033 (No). If you are not already in my camp on these issues, and I suspect many of you are, please take a minute and read the following heartfelt appeal. These are super important to me and will affect all of us, directly or indirectly. Feel free to forward this to your contact list and let your friends and family know how important it is to get out the vote this year!

Vote NO on Initiative 1033

- Tim Eyman’s I-1033 would cap current recession-level budgets for the state, counties and cities and apply a rigid, one-size-fits all growth formula to account for inflation and population growth. Washington State is currently operating under a nearly $9 billion budget shortfall, and drastic cuts have been made to fundamental services across the board (healthcare, education, transportation, safety services, non profits etc). I-1033 would make those drastic cuts permanent. Do you or someone you know work in any of these sectors (Hint: yes, me!)? Be prepared for even more jobs lost and massive damage to education, healthcare, emergency response and other crucial government services.

- I-1033 is based on a 1992 Colorado law called TABOR. This law caused so much damage to the Colorado economy that voters overturned it in 2005. Tim Eyman wants to bring a failed initiative to Washington State.

- Finally, what I consider the most insidious aspect of this initiative, in exchange for the above listed damage, I-1033 vaguely promises “tax breaks” for Washingtonians. In reality, only property owners will see any fiscal returns, with those in the highest income brackets experiencing the most benefit. Under I-1033, revenue (via sales tax) generated in excess of the capped budget would be funneled into property tax relief for the following year. In other words, this is a wealth redistribution scheme that shifts the tax responsibility disproportionately onto the lower income classes, as signified by the property you own. If you are a renter, you will see no benefit.

Approve Referendum 71

- Referendum 71 is the civil rights issue of this generation, and I am passionately committed to ensuring that all couples have the same rights and protections that I enjoy as a married person in this state. Referendum 71 asks Washington voters whether they want to retain the law passed in the state legislature this year that expanded benefits for domestic partnerships. Some of these expanded benefits include the ability to take family and medical leave in order to care for a sick partner and benefits for police and firefighter’s partners if they die in the line of duty. There are currently over 12,000 people in registered domestic partnerships in Washington State, which includes gay and lesbian couples as well as heterosexual senior citizen partnerships. (Widowed or divorced seniors over 62 risk losing their social security and other pension benefits from their spouses if they re-marry, so they often chose to enter into domestic partnerships to avoid this penalty).

- While I feel disgusted that people’s rights are being determined by a public vote, I am extending a heartfelt appeal to all my friends and family to please vote APPROVE on Referendum 71. Loving, committed couples deserve equal protection under the law.

For the sake of my close friends and family (and my dear, patient Matt) who have suffered through my stress and exhaustion the past few weeks, I sincerely thank you for taking the time to read this letter and to seriously consider these issues. Please vote No on I-1033 and Approve on Referendum 71.

much love,

kim

Mercy Abortions

"The number one reason for abortions past 24 weeks is the late discovery of a fetal anomaly incompatible with life."

Imagine yourself in these situations and imagine a doctor who risked his life every day (and his family's safety) so that you wouldn't have to watch your baby suffer through death within days or hours of birth and that you could safely conceive again. No one wants to perform abortions, but we are not living in a black and white world, and I thank god (or my lucky stars) for Dr. Tiller's dedication, compassion, and selflessness for stepping up and sacrificing himself so that women have access to safe, legal abortion in this country. RIP

life in the backyard: weekends in May

New glasses. I haven't put my prescription in them yet, but that doesn't prevent me from showing them off.

The coconut cream pie I made for Mother's Day dinner.

Matt's makeshift immersion circulator for salmon sous-vide, which was excellent!

My homemade Sangria for Mother's Day dinner. It was fantastic.

The kitties enjoy some bird watching.

Matt adds the final brulee touches to his salmon. He's got mad blow torch skills.

The girls strike a pose during their first backyard outing!

Lily musters all the patience in her power. Shortly afterward she plowed head first into the chicken wire.

We had Matt’s parents over for dinner last Saturday, and here were the fruits of our labor:

- Coconut Shrimp

I recently watched a good pre-code with Barbara Stanwyck called Illicit (1931). She was dazzling really, although I have no idea what she saw in the male lead. I really like Barbara Stanwyck in her pre-codes. I think I really like her in general, despite contrary opinions from certain housemates. (meow)

latest embroidery project

I decided a peacock would be a fun thing to embroidery, so I sketched one based on a feather in my room and improvised. Here is the result.

nothing in particular

1. We went to Seattle proper Sunday night for the "cousin dinner" for my mother-in-law's family who was coming to town for one night only from Massachusetts. We went to a restaurant on the waterfront, but killed time at Pike Place for an hour or so first. I got to visit a few of my old favorites, including Old Seattle Paperworks where I found a sweet poster of the Sheik with Rudolph Valentino. It was a crazy whirlwind and so bloody hot I could barely think. There's nothing quite like (rare) 90 degree Seattle humidity combined with hundreds of thousands of tourists packed and buzzing like sweaty penguins.

2. My embroidery project of a peacock feather is going swimmingly! I am done with the eye and have moved on to the wisps. (I'm sure there's a technical term for those). I'm pretty excited about this one.

3. At some point I want to try making these paper flowers. I like the idea.

4. I need to have my mom send me my old Spirograph game. I think I could create some kind of arts and crafts with it.

5. Current book: The Awkward Age by Henry James. Early conclusion: awkward read and awkward dialogue.
